Ayala vs Apolinario vacant title fight reportedly set for Aug. 9

According to ESPN’s Salvador Rodriguez, Zanfer Promotions has won the bid to host the IBF flyweight title fight between Angel Ayala and Dave Apolinario on August 9th in Mexico City.

Zanfer, known for its partnership with Top Rank, is likely to broadcast the fight on ESPN or ESPN+. In addition, reports suggest that Top Rank is also planning to showcase Luis Alberto Lopez vs Angelo Leo the next day in New Mexico, although there has been a delay in the official announcement.

Ayala (17-0, 7 KO) and Apolinario (20-0, 14 KO), ranked no. 4 and no. 6 by BoxRec, were mandated to fight for the title after the belt was vacated by “Bam” Rodriguez. Ayala, the younger of the two fighters, has notable wins over experienced opponents such as Cristofer Rosales and Felix Alvarado.

With this fight filling the IBF vacancy and another bout doing the same for the WBO, the only missing piece is a challenger for Kenshiro Teraji’s WBC title. Ayala was initially the top choice, but now the opportunity may go to no. 2 Francisco “Chihuas” Rodriguez Jr or Cristofer Rosales.
