Usyk vacates IBF title ahead of Fury rematch

Just a day before Matchroom and Queensberry’s highly anticipated September 21st event at Wembley is set to be announced, undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk took to Twitter to declare that he is relinquishing his IBF title to allow Anthony Joshua and Daniel Dubois to compete for it.

This move doesn’t come as a surprise, as the IBF had previously indicated that Usyk’s mandatory defense obligation would take precedence over his scheduled rematch with Tyson Fury on December 21st. With a perfect record of 22-0, including wins over both Joshua and Dubois, Usyk decided to step aside, acknowledging that a real title fight between Joshua (28-3) and Dubois (21-2) is a significant event for British boxing.

Personally, I have no qualms about this decision. Losing one of his four belts won’t diminish the excitement of the Fury rematch, and it will add a meaningful element to the Joshua vs Dubois bout, which promises to be one of the biggest British domestic showdowns in recent history.
